Design and Fashion Musts for June

Design and Fashion Musts for June

Take the Floor

English brand The Rug Company, best known for its range of designer rugs by the likes of Alexander McQueen, Paul Smith, Kelly Wearstler and a host of other design luminaries, recently opened its first South African outlet in Cape Town’s Bree Street. Joining a global network of stores, The Rug Company’s foray onto our shores means we no longer have to merely pine over them in the pages of international magazines.

The Fast and Luxurious

Recently unveiled in China at the 2015 Auto Shanghai, Bentley’s EXP 10 Speed 6 is a British interpretation of a high-performance two-seater sports car. The EXP 10 Speed 6 fuses speed with elegant, timeless design, progressive craftsmanship techniques and modern technologies. Using the finest materials and advanced hybrid technology, the concept shows the future direction of luxury and performance.

Full Circle

Dutch brand Moooi’s new rug and carpet collection, launched at this year’s Salone del Mobile, features designs by Christian Lacroix, Marcel Wanders, Bas Kosters, Sonya Pletes and others. The carpets were designed using ground-breaking ChromoJet technology that delivers eye-popping colours in various combinations without sacrificing print detail. The printing system also allows for floor-covering sizes to be customised. That’s an important factor for a brand like Moooi, which services the hospitality, leisure and corporate markets. We think the star of the show is the magical Celestial rug (right) by Edward van Vliet.

Outside Interests

Woolworths has really upped the stakes with its stylish gardening products. We were thrilled to discover the new seed range that, apart from being heirloom, comes gorgeously packaged. Watering cans, spritzers and even the pots are all ornamental in themselves, with or without the plants.

The Big 5

Straight from Kramerville in Joburg to Cape Town’s Woodstock comes 5Five, whose store at The Palms centre serves as a collaborative space housing a number of SA’s well-loved decor and design brands – Julian Decor, Sasi Wallpaper, Bosco Flooring, Sisal & Jute Carpets and Lamps on Line. The Palms store stocks everything from natural flooring to decor accessories, dinnerware and art (in collaboration with Art Eye Gallery) and will service both the trade and the public markets.

In Charge

Combining fashion and convenience, local brand Take Charge’s purses, laptop sleeves and clutches are the answer to your low-battery woes. With a micro USB port and iPhone adapter power source housed in the stylish leather bags (note the quirky patterned linings), you’ll never have to worry about your most important communication tool dying on you. The device is compatible with the latest smartphones. Take Charge also offers an online shopping service and to-your-door delivery.

Winter Warmers

At the top of our winter wish list this year is Hertex’s range of micro-fibre winter blankets that are reversible and come in neutral colours and eye-catching designs, like a nautical pattern, colour-blocked triangles and a tribal-inspired arrow motif (below). Lounging around has never looked this chic.

Free Range

Luxury German kitchen supplier Bulthaup has just introduced its new Solitaires range of freestanding aluminium-framed units that can be used for preparation or display. These beautifully crafted items, in wood or glass, are both luxurious and practical and will enhance any living space.

Marble Musings

The trend towards marble is showing no sign of abating, and now high-profile architect and designer Zaha Hadid has hopped on the marble bandwagon with her recently released range of Tau vases (below) and Quad tables for Citco. These eye-catching objects feature intricate pleats and have been created by means of a high-tech milling machine that carves the individual designs according to digitally generated models.

Some like it Hot

When two trends align to bring us something new, we’re all over it. Take Vinyasa yoga practised in a room heated to around 37°C, mix it with pop-up locations and you get Hotpod Yoga, the newest exercise concept to take SA by storm. The UK-based parent company has developed various-sized inflatable heated pods that can pop up in various locations. Find them in Greenside at the Pirates Club, in Midrand at the Body Beautiful Gym and in Pretoria along Pinaster Avenue. You can book online. First class is free.

The go-to publication for stylish, design-savvy establishments, Design Hotels has recently launched its 2015 coffee-table book featuring 279 independent hotels worldwide. Based on the premise that ‘a great hotel is really a great story’, the book includes not only awe-inspiring pictures but also the inside track from the various hoteliers, designers and architects – all at the top of their respective games – responsible for bringing them to life.
