Getting creative with Helsinki design
From the Cape to Paris, then London and now Helsinki, here is part four of our 5-part global design journey.
Helsinki Design Week 4–14 September
The previous holder of the world design capital accolade, Helsinki is hosting its 10th design week this year. It’s set to be the biggest yet with more than 150 planned events all over the city. The theme of this year’s festival is ‘take a leap’ – an attempt to inspire the design community to be bold, and to continue to push forward. We like a word or two of encouragement!
While you’re taking in Helsinki design…
Klaus K holds the accolade of being the first official design-led hotel in Helsinki and has been a member of Design Hotels for almost a decade. Consisting of two buildings, one built in 1882 and the other in 1912, the essence of this establishment is old-world charm combined with modern aesthetics and convenience. Its underlying inspiration is derived from the Finnish literary epic The Kalevala, which was first published in 1835 and is filled with drama and intrigue.
The Midhill American Deli in downtown Helsinki has our vote as the hippest place to hang out. Completed earlier this year by local design consultancy, Visionary Design Partners, it has a relaxed vibe and beautiful interior finishes based on a Brooklyn aesthetic. It’s the ideal place to sip on a latte while people-watching. How are those hexagonal, black-and-white floors!
