Cape Town Open Design Festival 13–23 August
Now in its second year, this is not your typical design festival. attempting to investigate how design thinking can impact our lives for the better – a maxim closely aligned with what it means for Cape Town to be world design capital – the theme for Open Design Cape Town 2014 is ‘design is for change’ and has been chosen to tie in with the 20th anniversary of democracy in South Africa. During August, various venues around the city will host a series of events, seminars, workshops and exhibitions in which the public is encouraged to participate.

Shop for Design
We know there’s still a month to go until Spring, but when we saw the new range of fabrics and accessories by Skinny LaMinx called ‘Paradise is Here’, we were ready to whip out the margaritas and sunscreen thanks to its exotic island vibe. Inspired by designer Heather Moore’s trip to Tokyo, where plants are everywhere despite the overbearing skyscrapers, this collection is an ode to urban foliage and its softening of the hard edges of city living.
JHB FNB Joburg Art Fair 22–24 August
The FNB Joburg Art Fair, on at the Sandton Convention Centre, is celebrating its seventh year as a space for artists and art lovers to congregate. Another must-see is ‘Fabricate: A Handspring Puppet Company Retrospective’, which celebrates the work of this world-renowned theatre company.
