All hail Houghton

All hail Houghton

Houghton is the epitome of Joburg Living, and is as centrally located as you can get.

Early beginnings

Houghton boasts stately residences on large plots with magnificent gardens. Once home to Nelson Mandela and the stomping ground of Helen Suzman when she represented the suburb in Parliament, Houghton is filled with examples of traditional as well as art deco architecture, and many of the large houses in the 1930s were good examples of the modernist style inspired by the work of Le Corbusier. Upper Houghton has been declared a National Heritage Area, while Lower Houghton is experiencing a great deal of redevelopment, with properties being subdivided and rezoned for clusters. A quietly modest neighbourhood, Houghton has always been the Beverly Hills of Johannesburg, and developments like The Houghton ensure the preservation of these grand heritage homes.

The 168-acre Houghton Golf course – which is longingly eyed by many developers thanks to its prime real-estate value, was first designed in 1926 and later redesigned by Jack Nicklaus. It has a proud history as a championship facility, having hosted no fewer than eight SA Open events.

Home Away From Home

A joint venture between Silvio Rech and Lesley Carstens as the concept architects and Boogertman and Partners, The Houghton Hotel is the final phase of the The Houghton offering and comprises 110 units for sale on a sectional- title basis, with a further 70 being retained by the developer to run as a fully fledged hotel. Like those who purchase apartments in The Houghton, hotel suite owners will also be able to personalise the interior decor of their 45m2 hotel rooms, or they can take advantage of the ‘Full Service Plan’. Plus, they can place their suite on the hotel reservation system should they wish to generate a revenue from it. Naturally, owners also have full access to the hotel’s facilities, which include a fine-dining restaurant, lounge and bar.
