Music, festivals and event venues

Looking for something fun to do? Here’s your July event calendar for some of the hippest, hottest happenings around SA.

Cape Town World Music Festival

The Cape Town World Music Festival from 18 to 19 July at City Hall promises to be an aural sensation, with a line-up that includes genres and styles from all over the globe. SA’s own Thandiswa Mazwai will share the stage with Malian Vieux Farke Toure, son of the Grammy award-winning Ali Farke Toure, among others.

Plett Mad Festival

If arts and cultural activities get you excited, then the inaugural Plett Mad Festival, 23 to 26 July, is where you should be headed for your mid-year winter getaway. As a run-up to the national arts festival, the Plett Mad Festival will see a host of performers doing their thing at various venues around the seaside town before heading to Grahamstown. Not to be missed is the first food-film festival in SA at the White House, where visitors will be treated not only to foodie films but to an all-compassing experience where some of the dishes in the screenings will be replicated.

Add Some Colour to Your Private Event

Conceptualised with the working woman in mind, mani- and pedicures just upped the pace with the launch of the FoxBox. Essentially a mobile nail bar offering a range of manis and pedis (including pamper parties and corporate packages for hen’s nights and female employees), the Fox Box comes to your home or office in Cape Town with its own range of pamper products and various colour applications such as Gelish and Vinylux.

Check Out Joburg’s Newest Event Venue

A new conference and events venue has been added to Dunkeld’s legendary Ten Bompas Hotel. Dubbed Space, it was designed by Enrico Daffonchio. In contrast to the hotel’s more homely architecture, lush gardens and tall trees, Space is a minimalist black-and-white floating glass-and- steel box above the ground. ‘Space strives to be energy efficient by making use of solar heating, galvanised rainwater tanks and LED lights,’ says Daffonchio. For the interior, Ten Bompas maintained the minimalist feel with light bamboo floors, white walls, colourful contemporary Italian furniture and South African art.
