Satisfy the holiday hunger

Hidden Gems

Illovo’s Post Office Centre has two new eateries. Downstairs from the legendary Assaggi is Escondido (above), specialising in wine and tapas. Escondido means ‘hidden’ in Spanish, but while this new spot may be tucked away, it’s not going to stay secret for long. Although all the usual tapas classics are on offer, the menu changes frequently so there will always be something new. Plenty of wines from the walk-in wine cellar are available by the glass, too, so you can mix and match wines with your meal. Follow them on Twitter at Escondido_Jozi.

Then, tucked behind The Patisserie, you will find Ahara, a new restaurant specialising in North Indian cuisine. The dishes are deliciously authentic – the chef is from north India and traditional breads are made on site in the wood-burning clay oven.

Vegetarian, Anyone?

Got vegan or vegetarian friends to stay and need to book a table? Fret no more: Azure Restaurant at the Twelve Apostles hotel is your answer, with unbeatable Atlantic Ocean views and its new Taste of the Sea and Earth menu. Sommelier Gregory Mutambe has selected a perfect range of organic wines to pair with each dish. Worth noting is that chef Christo Pretorius (left) will also prepare vegan dishes – just let the restaurant know in advance.

A Taste of Freedom

The light, white floating pavilion in the middle of the courtyard at The Old Fort at Constitution Hill is as bold as it is delicate. It’s the new home of The Hill Café, which serves gastro-pub-meets-bistro fare with a refinement to match the architecture: favourites include burgers and sticky ribs, sandwiches and snacks. Much of the menu, down to the ketchup, is homemade. Herbs and veggies are grown in planters around the pavilion (there are six different types of mint for mojitos). Expect craft beer, cheeseboards and a smart, stylish, good-hearted vibe. The Hill Café is open from Monday to Friday, 9am to 6pm.
