The New Black | Maison Noir, Hout Bay
Maison Noir is as gorgeous as its name suggests. This exclusive-use villa is barefoot luxe at its best and the setting is truly magnificent, with the slate-grey exteriors blending beautifully into the surrounding forest of mature trees high up on the slopes of Hout Bay.
Designed by local architect Paolo Deliperi, who lives in the area himself and understands perfectly the play of light in winter and summer, the villa is open plan, with glass-lined walls taking in the surrounding peaks. Working with the concept of ‘kraal’, he’s linked the bedroom suites and living areas in a series of small buildings, keeping each one absolutely private so that five couples can find their own space with ease.
Entering the large front door via the boardwalk that spans the koi pond – one of the villa’s water features – guests are transported into a private sanctuary of roaring fireplaces, gourmet food and excellent wines. Winter is blissful here, with rays of sunshine pouring into the living areas. After dark, the media room and wine cellar downstairs beckon, but by day the outdoor entertaining areas around the pool are the scene of languid lunches and laid-back siestas with a good read in hand.
As a summer destination, Maison Noir promises hours of pool time in full sunlight with the cooling sea breezes and soothing sound of water to take the edge off the heat. A dedicated team, including a private chef, offers the complete concierge service, making a stay here bespoke in every way.
